People celebrate Nuestra Señora de Loreto (a catholic virgin) from 1 to 10 of each December, yet the priests in 2008 do not want to have a celebration as big as last years, due to lack of money. It is an agricultural region where people grow primarily lettuce, corn, chili and beans. A major family who sells lettuce is the prominent Vizcaino family. This town, however, suffers from being controlled by the drug cartel known as the Zetas. It does have good roads to Aguascalientes and Zacatecas. This town was founded in 1931 with the name Bimabaletes, and in 1956 its official name changed to Loreto. The cemetery is named San Antonio, as several funeral homes, since its believed that the first person to die in Loreto was a woman named Antonia. There is also a car club named Loretos Only and members of this club put a sticker on their car to display their membership.
The tianguis (an outdoor market) is held every Thursday and Sunday - with the one on Sunday having vendors from Aguascalientes come over. On Thursday, every store closes at 4 p.m. and wont open until the next day.
A Bodega Aurera store wanted to open in Loreto, but the people refused for it to move in, as they were afraid that the many local stores owned by families in Loreto would lose their business. Now the Bodega Aurera opened up in Ojo Caliente. People still have to go to different stores to get their grocery shopping done.
