Formerly known as Northern Rhodesia until independence in 1964, Zambia shares its borders with Angola, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, the DRC, Tanzania and Malawi. With an area of about 470 380 square miles (752 610 square kilometers), curiously shaped Zambia is larger than the US state of Texas. Zambia is home to some of Africa’s most remote wilderness areas, filled with magnificent wildlife and a host of charming safari camps.
Located on a mammoth plateau averaging 4 200 feet (1 300 metres) above sea level, Zambia is dominated by two major river basins - the Zambezi River in the south, and the Congo River in the north. The mighty Zambezi River forms the southern border with Zimbabwe, and consists of some of the most fabulous tourist and safari hotspots.
From the majestic Victoria Falls (one of the Seven Wonders of the World) to the river dreamlands of Lake Kariba and the rugged Lower Zambezi, the legendary waterway is a highlight of any African safari.
The historical town of Livingstone (near Victoria Falls) offers captivating insights to the past, as well as a rich collection of markets, museums and cultural villages. To the north, the remote regions of Kafue and Luangwa beckon visitors to venture off the well-worn tourist track. Some wilderness guides may say that walking safaris were invented in Zambia. The astonishingly wild northern frontier of the North Luangwa offers possibly the best game viewing on foot in Africa. Game drives (during the day or night) are readily available and African animal sightings are nothing short of breathtaking.
Zambia offers a variety of safari activities. Canoe safaris on the Zambezi River afford visitors a unique form of game viewing whilst gliding silently down the river. copious birdlife, animals drinking along the riverbanks, elephants snorkeling, baboons jostling, crocodiles sunning themselves and hippos snorting are typical encounters on the Zambezi River.

Known as “Mosi-oa-Tunya”, The Smoke That Thunders, the Victoria Falls region is Zambia’s leading tourist attraction. The sheer spectacle of the Victoria Falls in flood defies belief as it is the widest single curtain of falling water in the world (about a mile or 1.7 kilometres wide). At about 420 feet (128 metres) deep, with unique geological foundations, Victoria Falls has been acknowledged a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
An extension of the Great African Rift Valley, the Luangwa Valley lies in the central-eastern region of Zambia. Dominated by the undulating Luangwa River, the valley consists of four National Parks. North Luangwa on the western bank of the river is by far the wildest and most beautiful. The vegetation ranges from mopane woodland to riverine forest, open grasslands and acacia thicket, the beautiful sausage trees, vegetable ivory palms, red mahogany and leadwood thickets. The North Luangwa National Park is home to numerous species of African animals, including the Big-Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino).
Zambia is a fast developing country, and its bright future is epitomised by the development of Lusaka. With a rich heritage of colonial influence, years of social independence with political hurdles, and now an exciting new democracy, Lusaka lives them all.
New shopping malls under construction, fast food outlets, new roads and refurbished old buildings indicate a land on the move, while vast open air markets with colourful stalls provide an African touch. Fishmongers, hairdressers, second-hand clothing dealers (known as saluala) and fruit-sellers market their products to local buyers. The nightlife is vibrant with many roadside pubs and bar-lounges playing kwela, techno or hip-hop sounds.
